Key Verses

Philippians 1:27

27 Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

1 Timothy 2:1-4

1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

Introduction

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially with everything happening around us. It’s like being on a roller coaster—full of ups and downs. As we navigate through school, friendships, and our futures, it’s easy to feel out of place and overwhelmed with everything that is going on in America and in our overall world.  But today, I want to remind you that as Christians, we are not just living here; we are citizens of heaven, called to make a difference in the world around us.

Let’s take a moment to look at what that means. We’re going to explore three key points about our identity, perspective, and spirit as we live out our faith.

Key Points

1. The Correct IDENTITY

First, let’s talk about our identity. In the Bible, the prophet Jeremiah wrote to the people of Israel who were living in Babylon after being taken from their home. They felt lost and out of place, but God reminded them that He had a purpose for them.

  • Just like those exiles, we may feel like we’re in a strange land, but we must remember that we are citizens of heaven. Philippians 1:27 tells us to live in a way that reflects our heavenly identity.
  • Think about when you travel to a new place. You can enjoy the culture and meet new people, but your heart is still with your home. We can appreciate the world around us while holding on to our true identity in Christ.
  • Remember, we are ambassadors for heaven. No matter where we are, we carry the message of God’s love with us.

2. The Correct PERSPECTIVE

Having the correct perspective means viewing our lives and the world around us through the lens of our faith and heavenly citizenship. It’s about understanding our role as active participants in our communities while staying connected to our values as Christians.

When we adopt this perspective, we recognize that we’re not just here to exist; we’re called to thrive and make a positive impact. This involves:

  • Building Relationships: We’re encouraged to invest in our communities by forming genuine connections with others. This means being present, showing kindness, and supporting those around us. Building homes isn’t just about physical structures; it’s about creating a sense of belonging and trust.
  • Engaging in Good Works: Just like planting gardens, our daily actions can yield positive results.
  • Valuing Our Relationships: Building strong friendships and family connections is essential. These relationships shape our lives and influence others, showing them the love of Christ through our actions and words.
  • Sharing Our Faith: Our perspective encourages us to be bold in sharing the Good News. This means being open about our beliefs and inviting others to experience the love and hope we have in Christ.
  • Participating Actively: Working for peace and prosperity involves taking action in our schools and communities. This could be standing up for what’s right, starting a Jesus club, etc.

3. The Correct SPIRIT

Finally, let’s focus on the spirit we should have as we engage with the world.

  • Prayer is Essential: In 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Paul encourages us to pray for everyone, especially those in authority. Prayer is a powerful tool and should be a part of our daily lives, not just something we do in crisis.
  • Let’s not wait for a specific event to pray. Regularly praying for our friends, families, and communities can help us feel connected and empowered to make a difference.

Conclusion

As we wrap up, I want to remind you that being citizens of heaven means we have hope and purpose, no matter what’s happening around us. Remember Philippians 2:9-11: one day, every knee will bow to Jesus, and His kingdom will reign forever. Let’s commit to living with our heavenly identity, engaging in our communities, and praying for our world. Together, we can make a real difference as we navigate life.

Questions

  1. How does knowing you are a citizen of heaven affect the way you see yourself and your role in the world? Can you think of a time when this perspective helped you in a tough situation?
  2. What does it mean to you to be an ambassador for Christ in your daily life? How can we actively share our faith and be a light to those around us in a way that feels natural and genuine?
  3. How often do you find yourself praying for your community or the people in your life? What are some specific things you think we should be praying for, and how can we support each other in this?
