Key Scripture

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45

Biblical Story: The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

Introduction

In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn how to be the hands and feet of Jesus by serving others. Jesus wants us to love our neighbors just like He loves us, and we’ll see how that works through the story of the Good Samaritan.

Key Points

Be the hands and feet of Jesus means serving others with love, just as He did.

1. Jesus Calls Us to Serve Others

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a man is attacked by robbers and left on the side of the road. Several people pass by without helping him, but a Samaritan—a person from a group that usually didn’t get along with the man’s people—stopped to help him. The Samaritan showed mercy and compassion, even though it wasn’t easy or expected.

  • Key Scripture: “But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.” – Luke 10:33
  • Jesus calls us to serve others, even when it’s not easy or convenient. We are called to show compassion, just like the Samaritan did.
  • Upward Question: What does this lesson teach us about Jesus’ love for people in need?

2. Serving Means Going the Extra Mile

The Good Samaritan didn’t just stop to check on the man and move on. He went the extra mile by bandaging the man’s wounds, putting him on his donkey, and taking him to an inn where he could heal. He even paid for the man’s stay!

  • Key Scripture: “He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.” – Luke 10:34
  • When we serve others, Jesus wants us to give our best effort and go above and beyond. Loving our neighbors means not just doing the minimum but going the extra mile to care for them.
  • Inward Question: How can I show more commitment to serving others, like the Good Samaritan did?

3. Serving Others Is How We Love Like Jesus

At the end of the story, Jesus asked which person was truly the neighbor to the injured man. The answer was clear: the one who showed mercy. Jesus tells us, “Go and do likewise.” This means we are called to serve and love others with the same compassion the Samaritan showed.

  • Key Scripture: “The expert in the law replied, ‘The one who had mercy on him.’ Jesus told him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” – Luke 10:37 When we serve others, we are being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. Through our acts of service and kindness, we show others the love of Jesus.
  • Outward Question: Who is someone I can show compassion to this week by helping or serving them?

Conclusion

The Parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that being the hands and feet of Jesus means serving others, even when it’s hard. Just like the Samaritan went out of his way to help the injured man, Jesus calls us to go out of our way to serve others with love and compassion.

Remember: Jesus calls us to serve others just like He served us. By being compassionate, going the extra mile, and showing love through our actions, we become the hands and feet of Jesus to the world around us.
